Comfort Keepers In-Home Care in Madison, Wisconsin.

The average in home caregiver will need to be well-versed in how to handle a number of unique challenges and responsibilities while they provide care to a senior family member or loved one. However, if you are providing care to a senior that can no longer get themselves dressed in the morning, then you may have an entirely new hurdle to overcome.

While it may seem like a rather simple undertaking, helping seniors get dressed every day can be a big challenge for caregivers and it is often one that many caregivers are not ready for. If you are acting as a senior caregiver to your family member of loved one and have been faced with this unique challenge, here are a few ways you can make sure you are helping your loved one get dressed and ready to take on the day each and every morning.

  • Make sure that you dress seniors in cool, light layers, even if it is warm off. It is easier to take layers off than put layers on.
  • Take your time when helping seniors get dressed, even a firm grasp on a senior’s arm can cause bruising in some elderly adults.
  • Do your best to help seniors get dressed in the morning so they don’t hurt themselves, but let them be independent when they can.
  • Consider getting pants with elastic instead of difficult buttons, it can make getting dressed and going to the bathroom easier on both parties.
  • Pay close attention to your loved one’s shoes. It is very important that they are wearing snug fitting, comfortable, flat shoes with plenty of traction on the bottom.

Helping seniors get dressed is one of those challenges that many caregivers simply aren’t ready for because they don’t assume it will be challenging. Keep these tips in mind and you will find it can make your morning as a caregiver much easier, no matter what other challenges come your way.
