Family Caregiver Resources- Tips & Tricks For Central Ohio Heros

Before home care is sought through an agency, many families in Central Ohio often take on the role of a family caregiver to assist their aging loved ones.  Family caregivers are responsible for so much, from cooking and cleaning to prescription management, financial management, and scheduling medical visits. Although it can initially be a lovely and gratifying experience, doing everything for someone you care about may also lead to exhaustion, guilt, or concern.

"Are they safe while I'm not there?"  "Do they have everything they need?"  "Do they feel alone?"  "Was I too firm or lax with them?"

Questions regarding the health and safety of your loved one, as well as your own performance, will be at the forefront of your mind each day.  However, one question family caregivers often forget to ask themselves is:

"Am I getting everything I need to provide the level of care my loved one needs?"

Remembing to put yourself before others is an important part of being at your best.  In fact, a research study conducted by the Stanford Center on Longevity and the Stanford University Psychology Department found that the demands of caregiving increase the risk of depression and loneliness.  That's why we've created a guide to help each family caregiver navigate common obsticals.

When It's Time To Ask For Help

Options such as respite care and other home care services can benefit seniors and primary family caregivers alike, however, bringing up the topic to loved ones can be a challenge.  The process will not only require many difficult conversations but also knowledge of how to approach the situation delicately.  Sherri Snelling is a Gerontologist, Author, and CEO of the Caregiving Club.  Comfort Keepers was fortunate to be able to meet with her to help teach family caregivers helpful methods to get the care conversation rolling.
