Professional caregivers provide care for seniors or individuals with an injury, illness, or disability. This care can include helping around the house, providing companionship, and assisting with activities of daily living such as showering, toileting, bathing, and feeding. While caring for others can be incredibly rewarding and essential work, caregivers also must care for themselves. This is because the stress of caregiving can often lead to depression and burnout, which can often limit your capability to provide quality care. However, by recognizing the signs of caregiver stress, you may be able to manage (or even prevent) burnout.

Signs of Caregiver Stress and Burnout

There’s no one way to experience caregiver stress. You may feel waves of emotions, such as frustration, anger, or helplessness, or you may make mistakes while providing care. No matter which version of stress you experience, it’s important that you notice it and take action as soon as possible.

Some signs of caregiver stress and burnout to look for include the following:

● Changes in appetite, such as eating too much or too little

● Negative emotions, such as hopelessness or depression

● Loss of control, either physically or emotionally

● Trouble falling asleep or sleeping too much

● Loss of interest in activities you previously enjoyed

● Use of alcohol, medications, or sleeping pills in an attempt to feel better

● Overwhelming fatigue

● Headaches, stomachaches, and other physical problems

● Lowered resistance to illness

Preventing Caregiver Burnout

Now that you know what to look for, here are some tips to help you prevent caregiver burnout.

● Take care of yourself. Don’t skip doctor’s appointments because you’re too busy. It’s also essential to exercise and make sure you’re getting enough sleep (aim for 7-8 hours).

● Prioritize eating healthy. It may be a good idea to plan nutritious meals ahead of time or keep some quick and healthy snacks on hand.

● Get up 15 minutes earlier than normal and use that as “me time.” Sit with your coffee or tea, journal about your struggles and feelings, stretch, meditate, or do whatever makes you happy.

● Make a list of your daily activities and see if you can delegate any of them. Perhaps your spouse can help out with dinner, or maybe a friend can run errands for you. If someone offers to help, take them up on it!

No matter your situation, it is important to recognize that there are shortcuts, support, and strategies available to make you a happier person and a better caregiver.
