History and Culture

The earliest mention of the area where the present-day Cupertino stands is found in the historical records of the Spanish expedition led by Captain Juan Bautista de Anza in 1776. He led a group of Spanish explorers to the Coast of California with the purpose of establishing a Presidio on San Francisco Bay. In their way, they passed through the surrounding regions including Cupertino.

Cupertino was still a small village when the Spanish colonial establishments were starting to form. Then it was known as West Side but in 1898 the town got its present name Cupertino. Back then the culture and economy of Cupertino were solely agricultural in nature. Many of the pioneer settlers had ranches and vineyards. The whole area was covered by prune, plum, apricot, and cherry orchards. Cupertino then was a proud portion of the Valley of the Heart’s Delight.

Soon the progress of the region took turns with the developments of railroads and other transportations facilities that increased the population and the arrival of other business opportunities. Monta Vista the first housing tract was developed in the mid-20th century due to these developments and VALLCO Business and Industrial Park in early 1960.

Gradually being concerned with the unplanned development of the town, the city leaders started a drive for incorporation and finally on October 10, 1955, Cupertino became the 13th incorporated city in San Mateo County. Lindenmayer was selected as the first mayor of Cupertino a week after the September 27 election.

Gradually in this line, Cupertino turns into an intrinsic part of Silicon Valley with high-tech companies like Apple Computer, Inc., Hewlett, Symantec and Net Manage. With its moderate size, the unique and balanced mix of high technology firms, retail center, open space, quality schools and residential areas Cupertino now is the 7th happiest suburb in the US.
