24-Hour Home Care in Chisago City, MN

Comfort Keepers® provides 24-hour home care for seniors, veterans, and other adults in Chisago City, Lindstrom, Center City, Wyoming, North Branch, Forest Lake, Cambridge, and nearby Minnesota communities.

Multiple caregivers work rotating shifts so an awake caregiver is scheduled to be in the client’s home throughout the day and night. Depending on the personalized care plan, caregivers may assist with personal care, mobility, meals, toileting, companionship, nighttime needs, medication reminders, and familiar daily routines.

What Is 24-Hour Home Care?

Twenty-four-hour home care provides continuous caregiver coverage through multiple scheduled shifts. The caregiver assigned to each shift remains awake and available to assist the client.

This type of care may help someone remain in a familiar home when occasional or part-time assistance no longer provides enough support. It may be arranged temporarily following hospitalization or for longer-term care needs.

The National Institute on Aging describes remaining in one’s home while growing older as aging in place. Successful aging in place may require planning for personal care, meals, transportation, household assistance, mobility, and safety concerns.

How Does Comfort Keepers Provide 24-Hour Care?

Comfort Keepers’ Dedicated Home Team uses multiple caregivers working scheduled shifts. This approach provides:

  • An awake caregiver scheduled throughout the day and night
  • Assistance during nighttime awakenings
  • Toileting and incontinence care
  • Mobility, transfer, and positioning assistance
  • Meal preparation and hydration reminders
  • Companionship and reassurance
  • Supervision for clients experiencing confusion
  • Support with familiar daily routines
  • Communication with authorized family members
  • A personalized care plan that can be reviewed as needs change
  • Standby asleep caregivers may be available, provided the client's needs match state and federal work guidelines

Using a team avoids relying on one caregiver to provide continuous assistance without adequate time away from work.

Caregiver consistency is prioritized whenever scheduling allows. However, no home care agency can guarantee that the same caregivers will be available for every shift.

What Is the Difference Between 24-Hour Care and Live-In Care?

Families sometimes use “24-hour care” and “live-in care” interchangeably, but they describe different arrangements.

24-hour shift careLive-in care
Multiple caregivers rotate through scheduled shiftsOne caregiver generally remains in the home for an extended period
The overnight caregiver remains awake and availableThe caregiver typically receives an uninterrupted sleeping period
Designed for clients who may need assistance at any hourBetter suited to clients who generally do not need overnight assistance
Does not require sleeping accommodations for a caregiverUsually requires appropriate private sleeping accommodations
Continuous coverage is scheduled throughout the day and nightCoverage is interrupted by required sleep and personal breaks

Comfort Keepers of Chisago City provides awake, shift-based 24-hour care rather than sleeping live-in care.

Who May Benefit From 24-Hour Home Care?

Around-the-clock care may be appropriate when a person:

  • Needs help with bathing, dressing, or toileting throughout the day
  • Cannot transfer or walk safely without assistance
  • Frequently wakes and needs help overnight
  • Experiences confusion, wandering, or late-day agitation
  • Lives with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia
  • Has experienced falls or increasing mobility problems
  • Is returning home after hospitalization or rehabilitation
  • Spends much of the day in bed and needs regular assistance
  • Cannot safely prepare meals or manage household routines
  • Needs more assistance than family members can consistently provide
  • Wants to remain at home rather than relocate
  • Requires temporary care while a family caregiver travels or recovers from illness

An assessment is necessary because 24-hour home care is not appropriate for every situation. Some individuals may need skilled nursing, emergency treatment, or a residential environment with additional clinical or security resources.

What Services Are Included in 24-Hour Home Care?

Every client receives an individualized care plan based on their assessed needs, abilities, routines, preferences, home environment, and family goals.

Personal Care

Personal care may include:

  • Bathing and showering assistance
  • Grooming and dressing
  • Toileting and incontinence care
  • Assistance with eating
  • Positioning and transfer assistance
  • Supervised walking and mobility support
  • Morning and evening routines

Overnight Assistance

An awake overnight caregiver may provide:

  • Help getting into or out of bed
  • Toileting assistance
  • Repositioning as authorized
  • Reassurance during periods of confusion
  • Assistance returning safely to bed
  • Preparation of a light meal or beverage
  • Response to needs identified in the care plan

Non-medical caregivers can provide medication reminders. Medication administration and other clinical tasks require appropriate nursing involvement or formal nurse delegation.

Meals and Household Support

Caregivers may assist with:

  • Meal planning and preparation
  • Grocery shopping and errands
  • Hydration and meal reminders
  • Light housekeeping
  • Laundry and linen changes
  • Organization of frequently used items

Companionship and Engagement

Companionship and meaningful activities may include:

  • Conversation and social interaction
  • Music, games, hobbies, and crafts
  • Looking through photographs
  • Supervised walks
  • Participation in familiar household routines
  • Phone or video calls with family
  • Transportation to appointments and activities

Family Communication

With the client’s permission, caregivers and local care-team members can communicate important observations to authorized family representatives.

Families should establish clear expectations during the assessment regarding who may receive updates and when the caregiver or office should make contact.

Does Comfort Keepers Provide 24-Hour Dementia Care?

Yes. Comfort Keepers provides 24-hour home care for some people living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

A person living with dementia may experience confusion, changes in judgment, nighttime wakefulness, wandering, or difficulty completing personal-care tasks. These changes can make it difficult for one family caregiver to provide all necessary support.

A 24-hour dementia care plan may include:

  • Maintaining familiar routines
  • Calm reassurance and redirection
  • Supervision and safety awareness
  • Personal care and toileting assistance
  • Meal preparation and hydration reminders
  • Support during nighttime awakenings
  • Familiar music, photographs, and activities
  • Accompaniment to appointments
  • Communication with authorized family members

Twenty-four-hour care may help manage certain risks, but it cannot guarantee that a fall, wandering incident, or medical emergency will not occur. Home modifications, monitoring equipment, medical-alert systems, or another care environment may also be appropriate.

Is Temporary 24-Hour Respite Care Available?

Yes. Subject to assessment and caregiver availability, 24-hour care may be arranged temporarily when a family caregiver needs to:

  • Attend an out-of-town wedding
  • Help a child move or begin college
  • Travel for work
  • Have surgery or recover from an illness
  • Respond to another family responsibility
  • Take a planned vacation
  • Rest after an extended period of caregiving

Advance planning gives the care team time to assess the client, develop an appropriate care plan, and schedule a caregiver team.

Can 24-Hour Care Help After Hospitalization or Rehabilitation?

Temporary 24-hour care may help when someone returns home after a hospital stay, surgery, or rehabilitation.

Depending on the care plan, caregivers may assist with:

  • Following established discharge routines
  • Mobility and transfers
  • Meal preparation
  • Bathing, dressing, and personal care
  • Transportation to follow-up appointments
  • Medication reminders
  • Light household tasks
  • Overnight needs
  • Reporting observations to authorized family members

Comfort Keepers caregivers do not replace physicians, therapists, or skilled home-health clinicians. Private-duty nursing may be assessed and arranged separately when appropriate.

What Is Interactive Caregiving?

Twenty-four-hour care should provide more than supervision and task completion. Through Interactive Caregiving®, caregivers encourage clients to participate in daily life at a level appropriate for their abilities and interests.

That may include:

  • Selecting clothing for the day
  • Helping plan a meal
  • Folding towels together
  • Listening to favorite music
  • Taking a supervised walk
  • Working on a hobby
  • Calling a family member
  • Looking through photographs
  • Watching a favorite program together

Activities are adapted to the client’s interests, energy, abilities, and comfort. The goal is to support familiar routines, social connection, personal choices, and meaningful participation.

Does Comfort Keepers Provide 24-Hour Care for Veterans?

Comfort Keepers works with authorized Department of Veterans Affairs programs to provide Homemaker and Home Health Aide services to eligible veterans.

The VA determines:

  • Whether a veteran is eligible
  • Which services are authorized
  • The number of approved hours
  • Whether continuous care is covered
  • Whether services are available locally
  • Whether a copayment applies

VA authorization for some home care hours does not necessarily mean the VA will approve or pay for continuous 24-hour coverage. Families may combine authorized VA services with privately paid care when appropriate.

Qualifying veterans or surviving spouses may also be eligible for pension-related Aid and Attendance benefits that can help with eligible care expenses.

Comfort Keepers can explain the services our office provides, but only the VA can determine benefits and authorize VA-funded care.

What Does 24-Hour Home Care Not Replace?

Twenty-four-hour non-medical home care does not replace:

  • Emergency medical care
  • Physician or nurse practitioner services
  • Skilled home health ordered by a medical provider
  • Physical, occupational, or speech therapy
  • A secured residential environment
  • Hospital or nursing-facility care when clinically necessary
  • Private-duty nursing unless separately assessed and arranged

Frequently Asked Questions About 24-Hour Home Care

Is a Caregiver Awake During 24-Hour Home Care?

Yes. Comfort Keepers’ 24-hour care uses multiple caregivers working scheduled shifts. The caregiver assigned to the overnight shift remains awake and available to assist the client.

Does Comfort Keepers Provide Live-In Care?

Comfort Keepers of Chisago City provides 24-hour shift care rather than sleeping live-in care.

Multiple caregivers rotate through scheduled shifts so an awake caregiver is scheduled throughout the day and night.

How Many Caregivers Provide 24-Hour Coverage?

The number of caregivers depends on the schedule and personalized care plan.

Multiple caregivers are required to provide continuous coverage while allowing each caregiver appropriate time away from work.

Can 24-Hour Care Be Temporary?

Yes. It may be arranged temporarily after hospitalization, during a family caregiver’s travel, while a family caregiver recovers from illness, or while a longer-term plan is being developed.

Availability depends on the assessment, requested dates, and caregiver staffing.

Can 24-Hour Caregivers Administer Medication?

Non-medical caregivers can provide medication reminders when authorized in the care plan.

Medication setup, administration, injections, and other clinical services may require private-duty nursing or formal nurse delegation, depending on the task and applicable requirements.

Can 24-Hour Care Prevent Falls or Wandering?

No provider can guarantee that a fall or wandering incident will not occur.

An awake caregiver can provide supervision, assistance, and redirection intended to help manage risk. Home modifications, monitoring equipment, medical-alert systems, or a different care environment may still be appropriate.

Is 24-Hour Home Care the Same as Skilled Nursing?

No. Home care primarily assists with personal care, daily routines, meals, mobility, household tasks, companionship, and supervision.

Skilled nursing involves clinical services performed by licensed nurses. Private-duty nursing may be available separately following an appropriate assessment.

How Do Families Begin 24-Hour Care?

The process begins with a complimentary consultation and in-home assessment.

A Client Care Coordinator evaluates the client’s routines, abilities, personal-care needs, nighttime needs, home environment, and family goals before developing a personalized care plan.

Schedule a Complimentary 24-Hour Care Assessment

If your loved one needs assistance throughout the day and night, our local care team can help determine whether an awake, shift-based Dedicated Home Team may be appropriate.
