What is Palliative Care?

Palliative Treatment (pronounced pal-lee-uh-tiv) is described as "specialist medical care for patients with terrible diseases." Its goal is to provide patients with relief from the symptoms, discomfort, and stress of a serious illness, regardless of the diagnosis. The goal is to improve both the patient's and the family's quality of life.

Palliative care is offered by a team of doctors, nurses, and other professionals who collaborate with the patient's regular clinicians to provide an extra layer of support. It is appropriate at any age and stage of a serious illness and can be offered in conjunction with curative treatment." (Source: Center for Advancement of Palliative Care)

Palliative care is a medical specialty for patients with serious illnesses that differs from hospice in that it is provided at any stage of a serious illness. Palliative care can be administered in conjunction with curative therapy. Palliative care relieves the pain, discomfort, and stress caused by any life-limiting condition, such as:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Liver Disease
  • Lung Disease
  • Kidney Disease
  • Proficient (late-stage) Dementia
  • ALS, MS, and other diseases

Palliative care is delivered while promoting individual choices, with the stated purpose of alleviating suffering and increasing a person's quality of life.

How Our Caregivers Can Help

Caregivers help palliative care specialists and collaborate with them to design a care plan that is tailored to the individual's preferences and needs. Once a care plan is in place, our caregivers can help with personal care and other Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Among these services are:

  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Grooming
  • Reminders for Medication
  • Simple Meal Preparation
  • Laundry and light housekeeping
  • Companionship
  • Transportation to and from doctor's visits as needed
  • Shopping for Groceries
  • Other activities are prescribed by the care plan to assist the client in living freely, safely, and securely at home.

Comfort Keepers in Houston's primary objective is to assist seniors in aging in place independently; however, we offer caregiving services to people of all ages 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We also provide temporary (or respite) caregivers to families and other providers so they can take a break from time to time.
