Village of Bartlett
The Village of Bartlett was originally a camping and hunting ground for a number of Native American tribes. The area retains its woodland beauty today, along with a mix of Victorian houses, mid-century homes and bungalows. The village bears the name of Luther Bartlett, who purchased 320 acres of farmland in Wayne Township in 1844. In order to entice the Chicago & Pacific Railroad to extend its railroad line to the region, in the 1870s Bartlett donated some of his own land for the original train depot, which still stands today. The new century brought tremendous growth and change. By 1910, the village had a population of 408, and there were 200 phones in town. An ordinance to adopt the first speed limits in Bartlett was passed in 1915. And by the 1920s, the village’s July 4th Parade had grown into a major social event. Bartlett had just 716 residents in 1950, but commercial and residential development over the last 50 years has increased the population to more than 40,000.
