CHF Facts

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for Americans. According to the CDC, heart disease has claimed more lives than Alzheimer’s and diabetes combined. CHF can lead to further complications like neuropathy of the hands and feet, excessive weight gain as a result of water retention, and swelling of other organs.

Causes of Congestive Heart Failure

CHF often occurs when the heart has been damaged by other medical complications, but can occur on its own. The heart can’t properly pump blood or can’t pump enough blood when it is weakened. This forces the heart to work harder and one of two conditions occur: the ventricle walls become too thick, or too thin.

When the ventricle wall is too thick, the ventricle (one of the four chambers of the heart) becomes smaller than normal, so the heart can only pump a small amount of blood at a time. Now the heart has to work harder to supply adequate blood to the body, which damages the heart over time.

Conversely, when the ventricle walls are too thin, the ventricle becomes larger than normal. The heart must now work much harder than normal to fill the ventricle, and will be unable to supply enough blood to the body, damaging the heart over time.

Both conditions will eventually lead to congestion of blood in other parts of the body like the liver, lungs, abdomen, and lower extremities. This congestion can cause further complications and can ultimately lead to heart failure.
