Socialization and Senior Wellness
For many Americans, the subject of senior health and wellness is complicated, but there are some things that we still have in common. For instance, many seniors face feelings of frustration as their bodies age and they aren’t able to do as much as they once could. These feelings can cause a decline in mental health and quality of life.
How Can I Help My Loved One Stay Positive?
There are many ways that you can help your loved one maintain their positivity! One idea is to encourage them to get more social interaction, both inside and outside their normal circle. As important as spending time with family can be, any interaction with people outside their family can be beneficial for senior’s memory. Groups that meet regularly, like book clubs or mall walking, offer new opportunities for seniors to share their thoughts, feelings, and stories with a new audience and make new friends.
What Does Science Say?
Researchers give neurotransmitters the credit for the mental health benefits of socializing. While talking with AARP about this subject, Lou Cozolino, a psychologist and professor of psychology at Pepperdine University, believes that the release of oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin into the brain creates this effect. When a person’s brain releases these three neurotransmitters, stress is reduced and it’s easier to feel a sense of well-being and contentment.
The Comfort Keepers® Difference
At Comfort Keepers®, our goal is to provide the best senior health and wellness care for your loved one so that they can remain in the home they love. We accomplish this by choosing only the best, compassionate caregivers who are dedicated to creating lasting friendships with their seniors. Our caregivers can offer as much support as their senior needs, whether that’s helping with daily chores, preparing meals, or just spending time together.
Another key difference that sets our caregivers apart from the rest is our unique approach to senior home care called Interactive Caregiving™. What this means is, all of our caregivers are trained to ensure your senior is fully cared for mentally, physically, and socially. We give seniors the power to control their treatment by working with them to schedule meals, activities, and more that they’ll look forward to. No matter what your senior enjoys, we want to encourage them and help them to write the next chapter in their life story.
