Mental Health and Your Loved One
For many, the topic of senior health and wellness is complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Many seniors will have similar experiences and shouldn’t feel alone. Countless seniors will experience things like low energy or frustration that they have difficulty doing as much as they once could, both of which can take a toll on their mental health.
How Can I Help?
One of the best ways to help your loved one with their mental health is by spending time with them and encouraging them to spend time with others. Socialization is a key component of good mental health and interacting with strangers can even help improve memory. How you ask? Well, making new connections allows your loved one the opportunity to share their stories or feelings with a fresh audience, while strengthening their ability to recall memories. Check out your local senior center for potential group activities they may want to try!
What’s The Science Behind Socialization?
Researchers give neurotransmitters the credit for the mental health benefits of socializing. While talking with AARP about this subject, Lou Cozolino, a psychologist and professor of psychology at Pepperdine University, believes that the release of oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin into the brain creates this effect. When a person’s brain releases these three neurotransmitters, stress is reduced and it’s easier to feel a sense of well-being and contentment.
