UV Safety Awareness Month
Protecting Senior Skin in the Summer Sun
July is UV Safety Awareness Month, and for seniors, the reminder comes at exactly the right time. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and its risk increases significantly with age. Decades of cumulative sun exposure mean that older adults need to be especially thoughtful about sun protection—not just during beach vacations, but during gardening, walks, and even driving.
Why Senior Skin Needs Extra Protection
As skin ages, it becomes thinner, drier, and less resilient. The body's ability to repair sun damage declines, and past exposure accumulates into increased cancer risk. Certain medications—including some blood pressure drugs, antibiotics, and antidepressants—can also heighten sun sensitivity, making burns more likely and more severe.
Everyday Sun Protection Habits
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher every morning—yes, even on cloudy days.
Reapply every two hours outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses.
Choose long-sleeved, lightweight, light-colored clothing for extended outdoor time.
Seek shade during peak sun hours, roughly 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Don't Forget These Hidden Exposures
Sun damage happens in surprising places. Drivers get significant UV exposure through the left window. Walking to and from the mailbox, sitting on the porch, attending outdoor events, and even sitting near a sunny window for long periods all add up. Keep sunscreen by the front door, in the car, and in any bag taken outside.
Monthly Skin Checks
Regular skin self-exams catch problems early. Look for new or changing spots, using the ABCDE rule for moles: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter over 6 mm, or Evolving in size, shape, or color. A yearly dermatology visit is a wise investment for any senior, particularly those with a history of significant sun exposure or previous skin cancers.
