Pain and Dementia: How to Recognize and Intervene
Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at 12pm CST

It is well-known that people with dementia often have difficulty communicating their needs and distress in a clear and understandable way as the disease progresses. This session is designed to help learners provide more effective and accurate assessments of pain status when dementia is present. Emphasis will be placed on using preserved abilities, observable behaviors and signs, and their knowledge of what is typical for the individual to help screen for changes that should be investigated.

Objectives: By the end of this session, learners will be able to:

• Identify common signals or signs that people with dementia exhibit when they are experiencing pain

• List common causes for acute changes in function, behavior, or alertness/distress

• Discuss effective techniques for reporting and responding to changes in status.
