Village of Niles
Originally known as “Dutchman’s Point,” the village of Niles is a place where, in the 1830s, European settlers and Native Americans lived harmoniously. Legend has it that Chief Blackhawk often smoked a peace pipe with Christian Ebinger, one of the first residents. By 1890, the community had six saloons, two blacksmith shops and three churches. At the time of its incorporation in 1899, Niles had a population of 500. The 20th century saw tremendous growth, with the village establishing free ambulance and bus services to connect residents with various amenities. Home to the Golf Mill Shopping Center, the Leaning Tower of Niles (next to the YMCA) and the landmark Tam O’Shanter Golf Course, Niles drew national attention in 2011 when BusinessWeek.com named it "America's Best, Affordable Place to Raise Kids."
