Living Assistance Services To Help With ALS In Milwaukee, WI

Your local Milwaukee living assistance services are here to improve the quality of life of your loved one

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a form of motor neuron disease where nerve cells in the muscles slowly break down and die. While ALS starts slowly, with a small twitch in the arms or slurred speech, it eventually affects the ability to control muscles needed to move, speak, and breathe.  Maintaining independence is nearly impossible while ALS affects your ability to perform simple activities of daily life like getting dressed, washing dishes, or preparing meals. Thankfully, you can rely on the living assistance services from your local Comfort Keepers experts, who understand the challenges of ALS to maintain their quality of life.

Our Milwaukee caregivers are specifically trained to care for those suffering from ALS as part of our specialized care services.

Facts About ALS

ALS is different from Parkinson’s disease despite their similarities. While both affect muscle control, Parkinson’s involves the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain which control muscle movement throughout the body. Conversely, ALS involves the degeneration of nerve cells in muscle tissue. In short, those with Parkinson’s cannot send information to their muscles, while those with ALS cannot receive information input from the brain. Both diseases may lead to dementia, making it nearly impossible to maintain one’s independence and living assistance services a must.

Individuals suffering from ALS may experience difficulty walking, weakness in feet or ankles, trouble speaking or slurred speech, weakness of the hands, and other symptoms. All of these symptoms make living alone a challenge, and make instrumental activities of daily living nearly impossible. Muscles grow weaker as the disease progresses, eventually affecting the ability to speak, chew food, swallow, and breathe.

While the exact cause of ALS is unknown, doctors have found links to gene mutation and chemical imbalance. The most likely cause of ALS is damaged protein chains within the nerve endings which leads to a buildup abnormal proteins, damaging the cells over time; though this theory is still unproven.

The Sad Truth about ALS

Sadly, ALS has no known cure. Those suffering from ALS will slowly lose control of their limbs, their mobility, their ability to eat, and eventually the ability to breathe. Suffering through ALS alone is painful, dangerous, and difficult; but you don’t need to do it alone.  Comfort Keepers will be there to perform a variety of living assistance services, like getting dressed, preparing meals, moving around the house, eating, bathing, and more. Medication reminders and performing other daily activities improve the quality of life in spite of this debilitating disease.

You can rely on Comfort Keepers to care for your loved ones struggling with ALS. Our trained staff of in-home caregivers are experienced in dealing with ALS and all the complications that come with it. Trust Comfort Keepers to assist with activities of daily living, and even instrumental activities of daily living like running errands.  Can fill out a form online or give us a call at (414) 207-6894.
