Elderly Home Care That Supports Holiday At The Grandparents in Fargo, ND

If there is one thing that most seniors like, it's their routines. Many become so well-entrenched into their routines that the slightest deviation will leave them feeling lost and anxious.

More Americans hit the roads to spend time with family during the winter holidays than at any other time of year. Most think of this as a joyous occasion, a time to reminisce with family and have fun, but for many seniors, it is the most stressful time in their year.

As your elderly loved ones grow older, they tend to become more and more set in their ways. Things like having a houseful of family can create a significant amount of stress and confusion as their routines are suddenly cast into a blender. This can be exhausting for grandma and grandpa and those family members helping them. Here are a few ideas from our elderly home care team that might help make the holidays more fun and keep the stress under control.

B.Y.O.D.

Better known as bring your dish. What a great way to keep grandma from stressing over making a big family meal. Go one step further and have everyone help clean up after the meal.

Time for a Rest

When the guests include small children, their energy levels can be exhausting for seniors. Putting them down for a nap can be a great way to give your loved one a moment to catch their breath.

Become Gift Minimalists

Many seniors survive on a fixed income and worry that they won't be able to afford "nice" gifts for everyone. One sure way to alleviate this is to create an annual drawing to see whose turn it is to get a gift from grandma and grandpa. Put an age limit on who is eligible and keep it to just the kids.

Grandma and Grandpa Need To Be Watched

With so much going on, it can be easy for seniors to become overwhelmed, feel left out, or possibly even feel exhausted. It is important that your family or elder home care provider keep close watch over this.  Find them something they can to do help or an activity to distract them.  If they need a rest, take the kids outside for a while.

You Don't Have to Go It Alone

As your loved one's primary caregiver, you have so much on your hands already, by adding in holiday preparations you may find you need help. At Comfort Keepers, we offer respite care that includes one of our skilled caregivers. They can help with your loved ones, light housekeeping, meal preparation, shopping, and with your holiday preparations.

When talking to the rest of the family, be sure you let them know of any special needs or restrictions grandma and grandpa might have. By paying attention to small details like this, you can make the holiday fun for everyone.  To learn more, contact our agency online anytime or give us a call at (701) 297-2431.
