Healthy Aging Month
A Whole-Person Approach to Wellness
September is Healthy Aging Month, an invitation to look at wellness holistically—body, mind, and spirit. Healthy aging isn't about defying time; it's about embracing each stage of life with intention, supporting the habits that preserve health, and finding meaning in the everyday. Every senior has unique needs, but the foundations of healthy aging are remarkably universal.
Rethinking What "Healthy" Means
Healthy aging isn't the absence of illness—it's the presence of vitality. A senior managing chronic conditions can still be thriving if they're engaged, connected, moving, and finding meaning. Shifting our definition helps families and caregivers focus on what actually matters: quality of life, not perfection of health metrics.
The Foundations That Matter
Movement, even gentle, several times a week.
A nutrient-rich, minimally processed diet.
Seven to nine hours of sleep most nights.
Regular, meaningful social contact.
Continuous mental engagement and learning.
Purpose, faith, or other sources of meaning.
Proactive Health Management
Healthy aging involves staying ahead of potential problems. Regular check-ups, appropriate screenings, medication reviews, vision and hearing tests, and dental care all play a role. Open communication with a primary care physician—and keeping a single, updated list of medications and conditions—makes this management much easier.
The Often-Overlooked Piece: Emotional Wellness
Physical health gets most of the attention, but emotional wellbeing is the foundation that supports everything else. Seniors who feel connected, purposeful, and valued tend to live longer and recover from illness better. Faith, creative expression, volunteering, mentoring, and deep friendships all nourish the spirit.
