Fall‌ ‌Safety‌

Comfort Keepers In-Home Care in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

See How Senior Care Changes Seasonally With Comfort Keepers® Home Care Serving Allentown, PA, And The Surrounding Area

While there are so many things to appreciate about fall, it is important to remember that with the changing seasons comes changing priorities in senior care, especially for seniors in areas that get colder earlier. The chilly weather can certainly be a wonderful relief from the heat of summer, but never forget that it comes with its own set of dangers if you aren’t prepared for it.

In order to help you get started, Comfort Keepers® Home Care has put together a short list of fall safety tips:

  • Test and replace alarm batteries: This is more than just a senior safety tip, as everyone, young or old, should test and replace smoke and carbon monoxide alarm batteries every 6 months. Many people use Daylight Savings Time as a reminder.

  • Dress for the weather: Depending on where you live, the weather can vary wildly during the fall. Start getting ready for the colder weather by bringing out sweaters, jackets, and nonslip boots, but be sure not to completely pack away warmer weather clothing. You might also consider layering for days with chilly mornings and warm afternoons.

  • Buy seasonal produce: An important part of senior care is ensuring that your loved ones are eating a healthy, varied diet. Luckily, there are so many healthy, and delicious, fruits and vegetables that are coming into season! Adding produce such as beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, sweet potato, pumpkin, apples, cranberries, eggplant, and kale to your senior’s diet can help manage diabetes, contribute to heart health, and promote a healthy immune system.

  • Prepare for ice and snow: If you live in a colder area be sure that ice for walkways, car brushes, and shovels are easily accessible.
