It's Raining, It's Pouring!
We’ve all been there. You plan your vacation and wait all year long and then BAM! It rains! When the forecast calls for foul weather, you don’t have to let it get you down. Here are some great alternate activities to “beaching it”. There’s so much to do here in Brunswick County, North Carolina.
Visit a Museum!
The North Carolina Maritime Museum is located in Southport and has a variety of fun and hands-on exhibits. Voted one of the best attractions in Southport by newcomers and frequent vacationers alike, an afternoon at the museum is a must for any coastal lover who wants to dive into the fascinating history and culture that this region supplies in abundance.
Another great option is the Museum of Coastal Carolina and Ingram Planetarium. Their mission statement says it all, "To inspire curiosity about our unique coastal environment, history, and the broader natural universe through interactive, fun, science-based experiences.” This is a great place to explore local history and see "the stars" all while enjoying a break from the rain. Grab Some Rain Gear and Head to the Beach
If there is no threat of thunder and lightning, grab some rain gear and head to the beach! This can be an awesome opportunity to find shells after a storm, when the sea has tossed and turned to unearth hidden treasure. Look for a flash of black sparkle in the sand just where the water touches – often, you will find that tiny sparkle is actually a hidden shark’s tooth.
Did Someone Say Shopping?!
There are so many options for unique shopping experiences in our area. Shallotte has a wonderful shopping center featuring a variety of stores including Ross, Marshall's and more.
If you like a bargain, there are a number of consignment and thrift stores throughout Brunswick County. Many feature unique, local artists! Check out Flamingo Treasures, The Diva's Daughter's, Nells, and more! A quick search will give you loads of options in an around Calabash, Shallotte, Sunset Beach, and beyond.
Hungry? Grab a bite to eat!
Don't let the rain deter you from venturing out for a tasty lunch! Shallotte, Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle and beyond all have some fabulous options for delicious food. Here are a few of our favorites.
Beaches Burgers has been around for a long time and, there's good reason for that. The food is freshly prepared, tasty, and affordable! This place isn't fancy but, if you like hot dogs, burgers, and crispy onion rings, you can't go wrong here. Located between Ocean Isle and Sunset Beach, you will definitely want to add this to your list of burger joints to visit - just ask a local!
Another great spot located in Ocean Isle is the oldest restaurant on the island - Sharky's! A favorite of locals and tourists alike, Sharky's features a large dining area overlooking the beautiful intracoastal waterway. There's also a marina there so, if you are looking to do some fishing, you can sign up for a charter fishing excursion.
With so many fabulous food options, you simply can't go wrong when searching for a delicious lunch or dinner. We would love to hear from you and learn your favorites!
