4 Reasons Activity is Important for Senior Health

Comfort Keepers In-Home Care in Edina, Minnesota.

4 Reasons Activity is Important for Senior Health

Living an active lifestyle is important for people of all ages including seniors. Here are 4 reasons why activity can help seniors remain independent and healthy.

According to a physical activity and health report, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), by age 75 only one in three men and one in two women are active. The risk of inactivity is greatly impacted by age. As caregivers, it is crucial that we help and encourage seniors to remain active for as long as they can, safely. Staying active provides seniors, and other adults, with many health benefits that can help them remain independent in their own home and engaged in the community that they love.

At Comfort Keepers of Edina, we have helped many seniors remain active through our unique approach to in-home care, called Interactive Caregiving™. Through Interactive Caregiving, we encourage seniors to participate and be engaged in their own care and health. Why do we focus so much on mind, body, and soul as a component of our in-home care service? Because we truly believe it improves quality of life.

Here are 4 reasons activity is important for senior health and why we take it so seriously.

Activity helps with bone health and strength

According to NIH Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases National Resource Center, physical activity is one of the most important ways to maintain and build bone strength. Some of the best exercises for bone health and strength include walking, jogging, hiking, climbing stairs, playing tennis, and dancing. Keeping a senior's physical condition and limitations in mind is important when choosing the best physical activity for them.

Did you know that 43.9% of seniors have low bone density? Being active to improve and maintain bone health is important for seniors because low bone density can increase the risk of fractures, stooped back, and decreased height.

Staying active promotes heart and cardiovascular health

Maintaining good cardiovascular health is important as we age. 14.2% of people, age 45 and older, report having coronary heart disease (CHD). Heart disease can cause many issues including heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, artery disease, and cardiac arrest. Staying active is one of the best ways to improve and maintain good cardiovascular health. In fact, people who engage in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity leisure activity per week have a 14% lower risk of coronary heart disease.

Activity boosts mental and emotional health

Depression and loneliness are common among seniors. This can be due to many reasons including a decline in physical health, medications, loss of family or friends, and major life events. Helping seniors remain active can provide them with both a mental and emotional boost. At Comfort Keepers, we have seen firsthand the emotional benefits that meaningful activity can provide seniors and their ability to remain independent. Research conducted at UCLA Health found that exercise and physical activity can reduce the risk of poor mental health by 40%.

Staying active helps to prevent falls

Evidence shows that physical activity reduces the rate of falls by 23%. For seniors, staying active increases muscle strength and flexibility combating the risk of falls, often an event that leads to deteriorating health and loss of independence.

We work with each of our clients to find meaningful activities that increase their quality of life and promote good health and independence.
