What is aging in place and is it right for you?

Comfort Keepers In-Home Care in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

What is aging in place and is it right for you?

These days, there is a lot of focus on ways to age better and more comfortably. Chances are, you’ve heard the term ‘aging in place.’ If you haven’t, it can be hard to discern exactly what it means. Once you learn a little more about it, you might even be wondering if aging in place or an in-home care agency is right for you. Here’s what you need to know to make your decision.

What is Aging in Place?

Before you start deciding if aging in place is right for you, it’s important to know exactly what it means.

Where you stay

This part can be tricky, because it might mean different things to different people. However, where you stay as you age is really the true meaning behind ‘aging in place.’

Some people define it as staying in your own (or the same) home. Whether you stay with family, friends, or live alone, you stay in the same house. On the other hand, for some people, aging in place simply means that they continue living in the same community.

How is it Different From Other Options?

The biggest difference in aging in place versus other typical options is where you stay, and the overall environment you experience. Senior care facilities have long been a traditional solution for care while aging, although more and more people are choosing to age in their own homes. While you may have a visiting nurse or caretaker, you won’t likely have a caretaker on premises all the time.

Is It Right For You?

If you’re reluctant to leave your home as you age, you’re not alone. In fact, studies show that among adults 65 years of age and beyond, the vast majority would rather age in the comfort of their present environments. The majority is an overwhelming 87%.

However, wanting to age in place is one thing. Whether it’s the right choice for you is another.

Here are some factors to consider if you’re thinking of aging in place:

Can you minimize risk factors?

Depending on the layout of your home (and the condition of your health), you’ll have to contend with certain risks. For example, long sets of stairs often pose fall risks. Do you live in a multi-story house or a single level home? Is there a way you can avoid the need to go to upper levels? This may mean moving your bedroom or avoiding risky areas.

Another area that can pose a risk is the bathroom. Getting in and out of the bathtub or shower can be difficult. Are you able to install handrails or a step in shower/tub? Remember, the restroom is a place you need on a daily basis, and you might need to prepare to make some changes.

Can you get help when needed?

This is another question that really depends on your health and circumstances. If you need frequent help with ADLs (activities of daily living), can you get a family member or hired help to stop by daily? This can range from anything including bathing, cooking, and transportation, to helping you manage your own healthcare. Having check-ins will ensure you’re safe and comfortable.

Conclusion

If you want to age in place and do have the circumstances that allow for it, it’s a comfortable way to live. However, one of the best things you can do before deciding to go down this route is to plan. Get your family or friends involved and make sure you plan for everything, from small renovations to transportation to the grocery store.
