Home Care Specialists Emphasize The Importance Of Immunizations In Older Adults

Have your senior loved ones made sure that they are properly immunized? Home Care Specialists warn that all families should ensure their senior loved one receives their vaccinations in Oklahoma City, OK

When it comes to illness and disease, there are many that are preventable and whether you know or not, many adults, 45,000, die each year because of complications caused by these illnesses and diseases. Companion home care specialists warn that unvaccinated seniors are at risk for serious health issues if they do not receive the vaccines that are recommended to them by their doctor. Often, seniors will think that they do not need to receive a vaccination because they will not fall ill or they will suffer from side effects that make them feel sick.

Seniors who are 65 or older often do suffer complications from illness and disease and can even pass from complications. Companion home care specialists advise that t is important that all seniors have their shot records checked accordingly to ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations.

There are some specific vaccines that all seniors should talk to their primary care physicians about and those vaccines include the flu, shingles, Tdap, and pneumonia.

Flu Vaccine

The flu vaccine will help protect against the flu. It is important that seniors and adults receive this vaccine, based on expert recommendations. While the flu seems simple enough, it can cause a lot of complications that exacerbate the illness and lead to continued illness. The flu vaccine is generally available from September to April.

Shingles Vaccine

The shingles vaccine has been around for a short period of time, but this does not mean that it is not highly recommended by companion home care specialists. In fact, seniors 60 and older should receive the vaccine for this illness that causes a red, blistery rash to form on the skin. The condition is painful and the vaccine can decrease your risk by about 50 percent and minimize any symptoms should you develop shingles.

Tdap Vaccine

The Tdap vaccine with the pertussis component is for seniors who are age 64 and younger. This vaccine prevents pertussis or whooping cough, which can be dangerous to the elderly and newborns. If you are a senior aged 65 and older, it is recommended that you receive the tetanus shot without pertussis.

Pneumonia Vaccine

Pneumonia is another illness that causes a lot of complications for seniors and as many as 60,000 seniors die per year because of it. Seniors who have a higher risk for the illness should receive the vaccine, as companion home care specialists recommend.

National Immunization Awareness Month is right around the corner, so now is a good time for you to speak with your doctor about what vaccines you should or should not receive this year.
