Advanced Planning for End of Life Care
We all tend to put off the inevitable, but advanced planning for end of life care can make a huge difference in the lives of your loved ones. It also assists in maintaining your overall quality of life should you need to step in as a caregiver. Thoughtfully planned decisions can help you and your loved ones during this very difficult time.
Planning your care procedure preferences before the time comes -- including things like CPR, ventilator use, tube feeding and comfort care -- should be outlined before they are needed.
During a medical crisis, you and your loved ones will be forced to make many tough decisions. Advanced planning for end of life care will make these decisions much easier.
Suggestions from the National Institutes on Aging
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) recommends you base your Advance Directives on your personal values and what you determine to be the best possible circumstances when the end is near. Answering soul-searching questions like “what if I am paralyzed, in a coma, or on a ventilator?” are all things to consider.
According to the NIA, you should also consider, “what makes life meaningful for you” and “would you be content if an emergency leaves you simply able to spend your days listening to books or tape or gazing out the window?”
More considerations include stroke care after the fact, organ donation, do not resuscitate guidelines and procedures for dementia care. Developing a Living Will, Power of Attorney documentation and other planning documents for Advanced Directive care is critical and should be done immediately if you haven’t done so already.
