Seniors are involved in countless accidents in their homes every year. While most seniors want to age in place and live independently, many homes are not properly designed to support their needs. In addition, seniors experience physical changes through the aging process, such as declining vision and hearing, that drastically increase the risk of injury in their homes. To help prevent injuries, seniors and in-home caregivers need to take extra precautions and follow these safety tips.

Remove Fall Hazards

Falls are the most common cause of injury for seniors. To reduce the risk of injury and encourage home safety, one of the most important things you can do is make the home fall-safe. You can achieve this by doing the following:

● Remove throw rugs. These often lack a rubberized backing to grip the floor.

● Clean up piled clutter. This includes newspapers, books, loose clothes, and shoes.

● Donate or discard old furniture.

● Create an open environment. Doorways should be wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers. Consider any tight corners before or after a doorway, as these may restrict access and make it difficult to maneuver around.

● Avoid extension cords.

● Wear non-slip footwear when inside.

Protect Against Fires

To remove fire hazards from within the home, it is crucial to take the following steps:

● Replace the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly.

● Check the electric cords of every lamp and appliance in the home. Replace any damaged cables and reduce the number of cords plugged into power strips.

● Remove candles from the home.

● Discourage the use of space heaters. If seniors must use one, place it at least three feet away from curtains or furniture and turn it off before going to bed or leaving the house.

Ensure a Safe Bathroom

Bathrooms can be the riskiest room in a senior’s home because falls and scalding often occur here. To ensure seniors’ safety, make sure to address the following:

● Install grab bars in the shower and next to the toilet.

● Set the thermostat on the water heater no higher than 120° F.

● Place rubber mats in the bathtub to prevent slipping.

● Consider installing a walk-in bathtub or shower.

● Place a special bathing chair in the tub.

● Replace the original toilet seat with a raised toilet seat with handlebars.

● Install a nightlight in the bathroom to help seniors find their way at night.
