Are the winter months especially challenging for your senior loved one? If so, they could be experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Find out what seasonal affective disorder is, common symptoms, when to see a doctor, and 3 ways to prevent and manage symptoms.

What is Seasonal Depression?

Feeling a bit sad may seem like a natural reaction to the fading glow of the holidays and the cold winter months. However, when that feeling of sadness lasts for more than a week or two, it can be a sign of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

In most cases, SAD symptoms develop during late fall or early winter and leave during the warmer months of spring and summer. In rare cases, people with the opposite pattern are more likely to develop symptoms that begin in spring or summer. In either case, symptoms may start mild and become more severe as the season progresses.

Signs and symptoms of SAD may include the following:

● Lack of energy, feeling sluggish

● Loss of interest in once-loved activities

● Irritability and agitation

● Increased need for sleep and/or problems with sleep

● Trouble concentrating

● Becoming anti-social, wanting to be alone

● Increase in appetite or weight gain

● Feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness

● Frequently thoughts of death or suicide

Symptoms of SAD can worsen if the individual is unable or unwilling to regularly spend time outside, which is particularly impactful to seniors who are housebound or reside in areas prone to ice and snow.

How to Prevent and Manage SAD Symptoms

When you can recognize the symptoms of SAD in your senior loved one, you can take action to prevent deeper depression and improve their quality of life.

1. Increase Light Exposure

One of the most important steps in preventing and managing SAD symptoms is to increase exposure to natural light. You can do this by opening window coverings, spending more time in the brightest rooms of the home, taking short walks outside, and simply sitting on the front porch.

2. Get Regular Physical Activity

Regular physical activity can reduce overall stress, anxiety, and SAD symptoms. This can also improve your loved one’s sleep quality, build their strength, and decrease their fall risk. Some beneficial physical activities for seniors may include walks around the neighborhood, yoga, light dancing, and cooking.

3. Seek Support

If you are concerned that you or your senior loved one have seasonal depression, don’t hesitate to speak with a doctor. They can properly diagnose the cause of the symptoms and make recommendations to help you and your loved one feel better. If SAD causes severe symptoms, they may recommend lifestyle changes to reduce stress, prescribe appropriate medications, or refer you to therapy or counseling.
