Seniors and older adults have a higher risk of weather-related illnesses and injuries, especially during the cold winter months. This is because icy sidewalks and snowy yards cause an increased fall risk, and hypothermia and frostbite pose significant dangers when it’s bitterly cold outside. However, there are a few things seniors and caregivers can do to prepare their homes for winter and allow for a safe, comfortable haven from the cold and snowy days to come.

1. Clean the Gutters

The best time to clean your gutters is after the leaves have fallen but before the first snowfall. If you don’t clean your gutters before winter, they can clog with ice and form an ice dam, which can cause damaged shingles, leaky roofs, and costly repairs. If you’re concerned that your roof has been damaged by previous winters, hire a professional to inspect it.

2. Swap Summer Bedding for Warm Winter Bedding

After removing your summer bedding, it is a good idea to clean and store it to prevent damage over the winter. Replace your summer bedding with a comfortable down comforter or wool blankets, and keep extra blankets nearby for nights when it’s frigid outside. You could also layer a few throw blankets or quilts for added warmth when it’s needed.

3. Turn Off the Water Supply to Outdoor Faucets

Shut off the water supply after draining any remaining water from outdoor hoses and faucets. This will reduce the likelihood that pipes will freeze, which can be a costly crisis to deal with in the middle of winter. If you have any pipes in your home that are prone to freezing, you can try wrapping them in insulated heat tape to protect them from the cold.

4. Reevaluate Interior Lighting

Unfortunately, the days get shorter in the winter, and that means fewer daylight hours. Even during the day, dreary gray skies can lead to poor lighting inside your home. This is why adequate indoor lighting is important to help seniors see better and reduce their risk of falls. You can replace some of your lighting fixtures with ones that are brighter or cover a larger area, or you can simply add a few more lighting options in rooms where you spend the most time. This especially includes rooms where seniors will be bathing, dressing, walking, cooking, or performing other tasks. It is also a good idea to replace current bulbs with ones that have a high color-rendering index, as they provide the truest light.
