Chicago: Ravenswood
Part of the Lincoln Square community, Ravenswood was designed to be one of Chicago’s first commuter suburbs. In 1868, a group of real estate speculators purchased 194 acres of farmland eight miles north of the city. They made a deal with the Chicago & North Western Railroad that they could guarantee the passengers if a new stop was created. They envisioned a well-to-do class of commuters who would make the suburb a desirable place to live. By 1874, the number of commuters who were willing to pay the then-astronomical cost of $7.20 for 100 rides had grown to 75. The addition of the Ravenswood Elevated line (now known as the Brown Line) in 1907 helped the neighborhood become a very livable, walkable community with a mix of single-family homes, two-flats and apartment buildings. Today, Ravenswood is home to a wide array of restaurants and entertainment options including The Davis Theater and The Old Town School of Folk Music.
