Chicago: Edison Park

Located between the Des Plaines and Chicago rivers, the Edison Park neighborhood on Chicago’s far Northwest Side was a common portage for early travelers, who would carry their canoes across it. Originally home to Native Americans, farmers moved into the area throughout the 1800s, and by 1890, Edison Park had become one of the first communities to be wired for electricity. The railroad spurred additional population growth, as well as the 1910 annexation of Edison Park into the city of Chicago. A post World-War I business boom attracted a new wave of residents, many of them second-generation immigrants who were Roman Catholic or Lutheran. During the 1950s, in response to the increased need for GI housing after World War II, developers began filling the vacant lots with new brick bungalows. This process eventually created a family-friendly neighborhood sprinkled with small grocery stores and bakeries. Today, more than 75 percent of the residents of Edison Park are of Irish decent. The NorthWest Side Irish Parade and the Edison Park Fest are highlights of the community's calendar each year. Comfort Keepers has been serving Edison Park families since 2000.
