Using the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Health Care Worker Registry:
How to Stay Informed
by Ashley Keenan
When searching for the ideal caregiver (even when using an agency) you can check a few basic facts about the caregiver using the IDPH Healthcare Worker Registry. By typing in the last name, first name, and middle initial of your caregiver you can confirm:
- Identity
- Pass/Fail of Fingerprint Background Check (listed as FEE_APP)
- Pass/fail on C.N.A. exam
- What type of care they were hired or trained to provide
- Waivers for past crimes/alleged crimes on his or her record
In Illinois home care agencies are required to list their caregivers on the HCW registry. They have access to more detailed information on the administrative side but the general information listed above is open for the public to review. Keep in mind not every caregiver will be listed on the registry. Caregivers are required to be listed if they have recently completed a training program or if they are currently working in the field through a licensed agency. Using the HCW registry is just one more way we can verify our caregivers will provide safe, informed care.
