Drexel Hill, though several miles west of Center City, Philadelphia, is considered part of Philadelphia’s sprawling metropolitan area. It embodies the best of both worlds. Access to Philadelphia from Drexel Hill is quick and easy, even without a car. Two suburban trolley lines run through Drexel Hill Junction. The SEPTA regional rail via the Paoli/Thorndale line accessing Philadelphia proves easy, as there is a stop at Haverford Station. Several bus routes even run through Delaware County, including routes 107, 110, 111, 115 and 122.
History
Drexel Hill has landmarks dating back to the early 17th century. The Lower Swedish Cabin, alongside Darby Creek, is the oldest log cabin in the United States. It is thought that the cabin was the work of the New Sweden colony, who settled around the Delaware Valley in the 1700s. It also established the trend and practice of building log cabins in the United States. Thornfield estate also lies within Drexel Hill. It was the home of Thomas Garrett, a notable abolitionist and one of the earliest settlers in the township.
