Native Americans settled in Clifton Heights, but during the 17th century, Swedish immigrants settled there and started to build businesses and homes. The borough was built on “mills”. These mills were grist, paper, leather, saw, oil, cotton, and wool mills to name a few. In 1900, there were at least twelve mills operating in Clifton Hills. The Machine Tool industry shaped the community, and because of this industry, Clifton Heights survived the Great Depression. The workers who worked during this time, most of them stayed and grew families here. The end result was a community with enough elasticy to bring together a diversity of people and businesses!
