Chicago: Edgebrook
One of the smallest communities in the city of Chicago, Edgebrook was originally home to the Miami and Potawatomi Indians. The 1800s brought many farmers of European descent into the area, but it was the arrival of the Milwaukee Railway that brought the most sweeping changes to Edgebrook. Railroad executives moved into the area and population growth followed. The establishment of what is today considered “Old Edgebrook” and the 1898 construction of Edgebrook Elementary School made the community a prestigious place to settle. By the end of the Great Depression, Edgebrook had been annexed by the city of Chicago. In the 1970s, a residency requirement instituted by Mayor Richard M. Daley, made Edgebrook a neighborhood were many city workers chose to live – and where many reside today. With a nod to the area’s original settlers, all the residential street signs in Edgebrook reference Native Americans. Comfort Keepers has been serving families in the Edgebrook area since 2000.
