Celebrating the 4th of July During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Celebrating 4th of July during CoronavirusWhen we think of the 4th of July, many of us think of past fireworks shows, BBQ’s and family gatherings. While things may look different this year, it is important to remember that we can still celebrate the best of the summer - even while physically distancing at home.

The guidance from state and local authorities continues to state that seniors and other populations at a high-risk for Coronavirus should continue to self-isolate and avoid public spaces. With this in mind, consider the following alternative Independence Day celebrations this year:

  • Virtual fireworks show: Finding fabulous fireworks online is an easy task. Seniors can pick a dream vacation destination and see what they’ve done in the past for the 4th. Online, anyone can search for Independence Day fireworks in New York, Boston, Los Angeles or their own hometown. And families can set up a video chat to watch together!

  • Get outside and BBQ: Families and friends can still get together with senior loved ones as long as everyone agrees to maintain social distance and wear a mask. This can allow for a classic summer BBQ outside - but with a twist! Have everyone bring their own BBQ favorites to enjoy, set chairs at least six feet apart, and enjoy the company of loved ones.

  • Bring the beach inside: While a trip to the beach may not be advisable, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the seaside from inside. Enjoy a virtual tour or video of the beach, play surfer music, or mix up a fruity drink! Decorations and a little imagination can make home feel like an ocean retreat.

  • Skip the outdoor concert and have one at home: Music can lift our spirits and connect us with our favorite memories. Singing, playing instruments or throwing a dance party in the living can be as fun as any outdoor concert! And, everyone’s favorite tunes are available at the touch of a button with streaming services and online video sites.

  • Plan a perfect day: Sometimes all it takes to make a normal day feel like a holiday is participating in activities we love. Seniors can spend their Independence Day gardening, enjoying their favorite music, baking something wonderful or connecting with loved ones. Focusing on self-care, sunshine and hobbies for an entire day can make the time feel special.

  • Be a patriotic pen pal: Spend the 4th connecting with a member of our United States military. There are local and national organizations that give the general public an opportunity to connect with a service member through care packages, cards and letters. Giving back to those that serve is a great way to commemorate Independence Day this year!

  • Get silly with Red, White and Blue: Sometimes a celebration is as simple as laughing with our loved ones. Have a contest to create the best silly hat, costume or photo booth prop, and show off your patriotic side! People can participate in person, if possible, or have a virtual Red, White and Blue party on a video chat. Being creative and fun helps people feel closer together - even when they can’t be physically close.
