St. Davids parish, named for the patron saint of Wales, is situated in this area that adopted its name.
The area was settled primarily by Welsh immigrants who took William Penn's promise of religious freedom and vast farming opportunities to heart and flooded the area in 1698.
With no other people in the vicinity speaking English, William Penn allowed them to speak Welsh, which contributed to the long-term influx of Welsh people to the area.
The St. Davids church was constructed in the 1700s, and for a time, was apt to help Revolutionary soldiers on both sides of the war.
In 1880. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one of the famous American fireside poets, wrote about the adjacent cemetery in a poem entitled, "Behind the Marker."
Meticulous caretaking of the notable parish cemetery has continued throughout the area's history, and the parish has grown to a membership of over 3,000, which is the largest in the nation.
