Until 1891, Gladwyne was commonly known as “Merion Square,” which was an initially settled by Welsh Quakers in 1682. Due to the many “Merions” located in proximity, the name Gladwyne was given to distinguish the area better. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the banks of the Mill Creek were occupied by twenty-four mills along with the major residential road which runs through Gladwyne. After the Civil War and the construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Main Line, many wealthy Philadelphians decided to reside their summer homes in Gladwyne. In the 1960s, the development of the Schuylkill Expressway (1-76) and the major development of King of Prussia significantly increased the appeal to Gladwyne which is still a contributor to the leading community it is today.
