Comfort Keepers Caregiver Spotlight: Nancy Nooney

Comfort Keepers In-Home Care in Saint Louis, Missouri.

A Legacy of Empathy

The role of a caregiver demands understanding. That’s because every person they work with has unique physical, mental, and emotional needs. Every family has their own values, priorities, and concerns for their loved ones that must be understood. And every individual in their care has a personality and life story you won’t find in anyone else.

The challenge of providing personalized care centers on connecting with and learning about each of your Clients, and letting your empathy and knowledge inform your care. This challenge is what makes Nancy love her job as a caregiver. It gives her a chance to empathize with, connect with, honor, and serve individuals she holds in high regard.

“I think it’s so important we take care of our elders. They’ve contributed so much to our world, and offer an insight into our past.”
-Nancy Nooney, Comfort Keepers Caregiver

Early in life, Nancy’s grandparents had a profound impact on how she saw the world; “My grandparents had a lot of wisdom.” They loved telling stories of their past and passing down lots of historical facts. This ignited a lifelong curiosity in Nancy, who would later study History at the University of Richmond.

Nancy has worked teaching middle school and high school reading, working one-on-one with students with learning disabilities. Connecting with students to help them break through mental barriers, enabling them to learn new things was fulfilling for Nancy.

Compassion in action

When she began work with Comfort Keepers in 2018, she wanted to make a real difference for the folks she worked with. As a caregiver, she’s done just that. Nancy serves individuals with advanced Alzheimer’s, physical restrictions, and various temperaments. She embraces the opportunity to meet people where they are to provide the best quality care for them.

Comfort Keepers empowers Nancy to do her important work by performing individual assessments on each in-home client, working with their families to design a personalized care plan. This helps Nancy learn about her clients faster and get right to the work of making a personal connection.

According to Nancy, you can’t be a good caregiver without empathy. Empathizing with her in-home clients allows her to better appreciate the challenges they face and how she can best serve them.

“Empathy, to me, is a huge deal and we need it now more than ever.”
-Nancy Nooney, Comfort Keepers Caregiver

Empathy is what motivates Nancy to do her work and it shapes how she interacts with clients, families, and other caregivers. The art of caregiving requires discipline, focus, and a heart for others. Nancy carries forward the love she was given from her parents and grandparents, and uses that love to care for others, fulfilling a role she believes she was born to do.
