Why You Need a Caregiver During Hospice Care

Comfort Keepers In-Home Care in Laguna Niguel, California.

What is Hospice?

The word “hospice” can sound scary as most people do not understand what it is exactly. When a loved-one decides with their doctor and familysenior and caregiver holding hands outside in dana point ca they want to spend their end of life at home, surrounded by family, a process is set in motion. The client and/or family selects a hospice company with the help of a doctors’ office, supplies are delivered, hospice company provides an RN to visit 1-3 times per week as needed, an experienced bathing aide is assigned weekly, clergy is available if desired, needed supplies provided and a licensed Social Worker on call to explain, process and support patient and family alike.

What hospice does not provide, is a caregiver, who helps your loved-one stay comfortable and peaceful every day/night.

Many families are not able to provide hands-on assistance as they do not live near-by or work full time.  Most importantly, most family members are not trained on how to provide proper in-home care tasks such as help to stand/pivot to a wheelchair if the client is too weak to walk, use a gait belt to steady the client as they walk to prevent falling, keep the client clean and dry if they are bed-bound, offer food/water, reposition in bed so no bed sores form, provide comforting massage or just listening ear. Creating a calm and comforting environment for client and family is the best way to care for someone on hospice.

Here are a few other benefits of partnering with Comfort Keepers during hospice:

Even if you or your family members are on hand to provide senior in home care services for a loved one, odds are good that there are some things you might not be able to do. Caregivers can provide professional care, order medical supplies your loved one may need, lend a friendly listening ear, and generally help your loved one navigate their final days of life.

If you can care for a loved one in hospice, even you may have your limits. In fact, a third of family members who perform caregiving tasks for loved ones have received no instruction at all on how to perform many, if not most, of these tasks.

A Personal Touch

A professional Caregiver offers a “personal touch” whether dealing directly with client, family members, or hospice RN. caregiver and senior walking in back yard laguna woods

A daily log is kept so all involved know what is happening with their loved ones. Our Client Care Manager can liaise with family members providing updates and even coordinate video chats to bring the family as close as possible. Feeling connected to one another during this time is an important part for everyone involved especially during this difficult pandemic. Our Caregivers are available for a few shifts to give family respite or 24/7 care and everything in between.

One-On-One Time

Another benefit that a caregiver can offer is personalized attention, which isn’t just limited to in-home care services. They can be there to lend a listening ear, they can be there to make a loved one more comfortable, and they can be there to sing songs or play cards. In their final days, your loved one will appreciate the one-on-one time a caregiver can offer. Even if you and your family make frequent visits, a caregiver can be there too, offering a chance for interaction.

Independence

Our experienced caregivers can help your loved ones maintain their independence too, whether they live at home or in an assisted living community. They can help maintain a social schedule, assist with everyday tasks so they can be as independent as possible for as long as possible.

Cost-Effectiveness

Spending time at home during their end-of-life journey is the #1 request of Seniors. Our Client Care Manager can help work out the best schedule and work within budget. This could mean family members taking shifts and a Caregiver providing needed respite or the Caregiver staying by the client-side day and night. Quotes available with a complimentary assessment.
