Respite Care for In-Home Seniors

There are many situations in which your elderly loved-one is in need of temporary, short-term care. The responsibility for temporary respite care usually falls upon the senior’s family members. While it can be a joy to care for an elderly loved-one, what happens if the required care is too difficult or too time-consuming for the family?  Often, those seniors are forced to be checked into a nursing home or other care center.

Seniors typically prefer to remain in their own homes where they are comfortable.  Often when seniors are forced to seek a care in a nursing home or other care facility, they are uncomfortable with the transition and can take longer to recover from their injury or illness. What’s the solution to this problem?  Short term in-home or respite care.  In this type of care a caregiver helps the senior in their own home and helps provide a much-needed break for the family by:

  • Helping seniors with their medication
  • Assisting them as they recover from their temporary illness or injury
  • Interacting with seniors and keeping them companY

In respite care the caregiver makes regular visits to the senior’s home and has the opportunity to get to know the senior and their family, helping out with the routine with which the senior is accustomed.

There are several important benefits for the family as well:

  • No worries about transporting the senior to and from the out of home care center
  • Much needed breaks from caring for the sick or injured senior
  • Peace of mind, knowing that their elderly loved-one is being cared for

There are two main reasons why respite care is important.  It provides rest for the family, and it provides proper, professional care for seniors.  The added stress of caring for a family member can add a great deal of stress on the entire family and without a break that stress can begin to cause tension in relationships.  Secondly the senior also benefits from having professional, in-home care. Without the strain of an out of home care center they can recover faster from their injury or illness.
