Mimi's Story

Mimi wasn’t her real name. It was really Mary. But Mary wasn’t the name she was given at birth. It was Maria.

She was born in Ferrara, a small medieval city in Northern Italy. Her parents changed her name to Mary when she came to the United States with her four younger brothers. Her mother was widowed two years later and then, not long thereafter, she lost a leg in a trolley car accident in Boston. Mary had to take charge of the household and get herself and the boys through school.

Mary became “Mimi” when she decided to be a hairdresser. It sounded so French. She wanted to cater to the finer ladies and Maria wouldn’t do. Mimi later became the first female business owner to be accepted into the New England Hairdresser’s Guild. She had opened a fancy salon on Newbury Street and her only competition after a while was Charles of the Ritz a few doors down. Mimi had arrived.

After her retirement Mimi kept her favorite customers by setting up a space in the basement. She also took on raising her two grandchildren after her daughter divorced and had to work everyday. The customers would come at various times three days a week, usually before the children got home from school. Her schedule dwindled down over time to two days and then, not long after her husband passed away, she was down to her last customer.

Mimi contracted colon cancer that eventually spread throughout her body. By then she had sold her home and was living comfortably with her daughter – still a single working mom – and her two grandchildren who were responsible for taking care of her after school. She passed away peacefully and at home at the age of 86.

Mimi was my grandmother.

Even when she was very sick, helping Mimi was never like work. I could always get her to laugh and she would usually want to talk about the old days. We went into shoe boxes full of pictures on rainy days and spent time in the garden talking to the flowers when the sun was out. She knew how to enjoy the simplest things of life.

Taking care of people in their most senior years or after a hospital visit is, of course, what Comfort Keepers® is all about. The reason I chose to join the company, however, was because of what really makes it different. It’s both the people and the approach.

We call our caregivers “Comfort Keepers” because they are the best in the business at what they do. This comes naturally to them, of course, however that natural talent is magnified and refined by the approach which our company teaches and requires. We call it “Interactive Caregiving”.

When we come to visit your home for the first time, we discuss and develop a Plan of Care that is tailored to your specific needs. The idea is to enable you take full advantage of both types of service we offer; task fulfillment and personal support.

The goal of Interactive Caregiving is to provide cognitive stimulation and emotional support. This means that having fun is allowed and encouraged, just as is reminiscing, enjoying quiet companionship and listening to music. This is what our “Comfort Keepers” do best.

We look forward to being of service to you. If you are visiting this website for the first time, we urge you to call us now and ask us about our rigorous quality control standards and we welcome you to come in contact with our unique group of caring people. Our service always comes with the Guarantee of Your Satisfaction!
