Senior Safety: Beating the Heat

As the record-breaking temperatures continue to sweep the area leaving us soaked in sweat and looking to escape the heat any way we can, it’s important to remember our senior citizen loved ones and friends and to be concerned with how they are coping with the extreme weather.

Comfort Keepers recommends that seniors take extra precautions during the hot, summer weather because they are at a higher of developing heat-related illnesses than older adults. According to the American Geriatric Society’s Foundation for Health in Aging, about 200 Americans die of health problems caused by high heat and humidity every year. And most of them are 50 or older. Elderly persons handle heat differently from younger adults, and as we age, we become more and more vulnerable to heat and humidity.
