Medical Director of Hospice of the East Bay to Present on Delirium
Wednesday, May 12th, 2010
The East Bay Case Management Association (EBCMA) will host a talk from Dr. Ames, Medical Director of Hospice of the Bay. Dr. Ames will be covering the topic of Delirium- including the symptoms, contributing factors, treatment by cause, and terminal delirium, both recognition and treatment. Delirium is a decline in attention, awareness and mental clarity often triggered by serious illness. The signs of delirium may include restlessness, agitation and combativeness. Often though, delirium looks like drowsiness and indifference to your surroundings. Delirium occurs in about one-third of hospitalized people over age 65, and in more than 70 percent of older people in intensive care units. In spite of its frequency, delirium often goes unrecognized, especially in people with dementia. CEU’s will be offered for R.N.’s. EBCMA hosts meetings in Walnut Creek five times per year with the goal of bringing together and supporting the Case Mangers in the East Bay area. If you are interesting in attending or learning more about the organization, please email Jessica Thomas at walnutcreek@comfortkeepers.com by May 4, 2010.
