Make Sure That The Fireworks Are Only In the Skies This July 4th
The Stars and Strips will be in full display this coming weekend with many older adults eating out. Originally, July 4th was a time associated only with getting together with friends and family to celebrate our independence and have some fun. In modern times, however, it has become a time to also overindulge in both food and drink and eat foods that are just plain unhealthy. What good is it, if what you eat will wreak havoc on your digestive track for weeks to come?
It is possible to enjoy the holiday without losing control and possibly getting sick. Remember the old adage, you are what you eat? Make it your motto. Forget Red, White and Blue and instead choose a variety of colorful fruits and veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. You’ll feel simply marvelous inside and out.
This weekend don’t forget that for seniors, the benefits of healthy eating include increased mental acuteness, resistance to illness and disease, higher energy levels, a more robust immune system, faster recuperation times, and better management of chronic health problems. As we age, eating well can also be the key to a positive outlook and staying emotionally balanced. Eating well is a lifestyle that embraces creativity in the kitchen and eating with friends. Isn’t this what July 4th should be about?Enjoy the weekend. Eat well and moderately and have some fun. Remember you are the boss when it comes to food choices! Don’t let someone else fill your plate.Least we forget, this is really what July 4th is all about.“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty.” John F. Kennedy
