Elder Care Options

Options are Expanding with the Growing 65+ Population

Today's senior citizens have more elder care options available to them than previous generations. The options are increasing as the number of Americans over age 65 continues to climb--and is projected to double to 89 million by 2050. By that year, the U.S. Census says, the percentage of Americans who are 65 and older will have increased from 13% to 19%.

The elder care option that is gaining popularity among seniors is home care. Home care providers bring a wide range of elder care services into the homes of seniors, enabling them to continue living where they are most comfortable and happy. In-home elder care services can be customized to meet the exact needs of each senior client. They are designed specifically to provide the assistance that will allow seniors to live safely, confidently and happily at home.

Seniors and families, working with an in-home elder care provider, can choose from a menu of services that support their independence.  For instance, personal care services, such as help with bathing and grooming, transferring in and out of bed and chairs; light housekeeping and meal preparation and planning; and companionship care, such as conversation, help with favorite activities, help with errands, and more.

Family caregivers can share the responsibility of caregiving with a professional in-home elder care provider. This provides family caregivers an opportunity to take needed breaks from the demands of caregiving so they can return with renewed energy and effectiveness.

In-home elder care providers develop networks with other elder care and health care providers, such as hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, rehabilitation centers, adult day care programs and home health care and hospice agencies. This provides their clients a complete elder care solution to smoothly address their changing needs, for instance, when they need to be admitted for hospital care and need a short stay in a nursing home or rehabilitation center before returning home, where they may require skilled home health care services before reverting back to the home care services they had initially been receiving.

Elder care delivered in the comforting, familiar surroundings of home promotes not only physical well-being but also the emotional and mental health of seniors. In-home elder care allows family members to be involved in the care as much as they are able, while it enhances seniors' level of freedom, contentment and quality of life.
